"At Oxford Evelyn had a greater reputation as a graphic artist than a writer, and as such was much in demand, designing covers for magazines, OUDS programmes, book jackets for Chapman & Hall and for the caricatures with which he had been successful at Lancing, when he bartered satirical sketches for cream slices and halfpenny stamps.
