"Tim's best book" - inscribed by White

Notes

First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author "for Elizabeth Alethea Harcourt" on the title page. The recipient is almost certainly the English artist Elizabeth Aletha Harcourt, the daughter of the painter George Harcourt (1868-1947). White wrote this account of his attempt to train a goshawk using traditional falconry techniques in 1936, but the manuscript was shelved in his cottage until it was rediscovered by his agent David Garnett in the late 1940s. White was initially reluctant to let Cape publish the manuscript, but acquiesced after some persuasion by Garnett, who proclaimed it "Tim's best book... a masterpiece". Inscribed copies of the first edition are particularly scarce.
