Notes

First edition, first printing. An inscribed presentation copy from the author to his daughter, inscribed on recto of front free endpaper: "To my sweet darling,/ Jane, from her/ ever-doting parent,/ Gene Fowler/ 1931". An uncharacteristically benign inscription: Fowler's animus towards children was legendary. William J. Fallon (1886-1927) was one of the most flamboyant characters of 1930s Manhattan, described in Great American Lawyers: an Encyclopaedia, as "one of the three greatest criminal attorneys in the first half of the twentieth century".
