The Great River.
The Story of a Voyage on the Yangtze Kiang. With an Introduction by Arthur de Carle Sowerby. Illustrated with Photographs by Donald Mennie.
Shanghai: North-China Daily News & Herald, Ltd. Kelly & Walsh Ltd., 1922 Stock Code: 143573
First edition, scarce in commerce, and although well represented in international libraries scarce in British and Irish institutional libraries: Library Hub locates just 4 copies (BL, Edinburgh, National Library of Scotland, V&A). An interesting work illustrated with photographs by Donald Mennie, who travelled widely in China in the 20s and produced a photographic record in The Pageant of Peking (1920).
Sowerby, a leading expert on Chinese natural history, comments in his foreword that "It is thoroughly in keeping with the spirit of the times that a young lady should come to China in a mood of adventure... It is the age of woman. Woman is coming into her own at a rate that alarms all but those who can read the signs of the times". We have been able to find little on the author but her book is cited in a number of recent publications on China.
