The Half-Shut Eye.
Television and Politics in Britain and America.London: Macmillan, 1969 Stock Code: 138181
NotesFirst edition. Presentation copy to then-Prime Minister Harold Wilson, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "to the Rt. Hon. Harold Wilson MP from John Whale April 1969". The author John Whale (1931-2008) worked in various media positions, as a political reporter and Washington correspondent with ITN, writer at the Sunday Times, as head of religious programmes at the BBC, and latterly as editor of the Church Times. The present book is on the interplay of television and political campaigning, published at the end of the decade where the medium came to be fully exploited by politicians - Wilson's skilful use of television is referenced several times in the book. Loosely inserted are four Christmas cards sent from John Whale to Mary Wilson, following Harold's death in 1995. The book (and cards) remained in the possession of Wilson and his wife Mary until the dispersal of their estate following Mary's death in 2018.
Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt.
Edges lightly soiled, otherwise a very good copy.
