First edition in English of Neruda's masterpiece, the publisher's copy signed for him by the poet on the front free endpaper, "Pablo Neruda, 1970", with the bookplate of Tom Maschler to front pastedown. Maschler was the head of Jonathan Cape, and a hugely influential figure in 20th-century literature: he had a particular genius for bringing world-class writers from abroad (such as Neruda, García Marquez, and Derek Walcott) to publish in the UK, and 15 of his authors were awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
