Chapelle was Senior Historian in the Department of Science and Technology at the Smithsonian Institution, and was internationally renowned for his knowledge of the naval architecture of America in the era of sail.

Etched frontispiece, one colour plate, 14 half-tone plates from photographs, 15 double-page plans, numerous line-drawn illustrations to the text, many of them full-page.
Jacket rippled and lacking pieces head and tail of the spine, the slipcase a little rubbed and tanned, but overall a very good copy.
