Notes

First edition of "the first book in English that describes in detail what are today called modern wines" (Gabler). Alexander Henderson (1780-1863) was a Scottish doctor and man of letters, whose expertise on wine and its production was based on observations made during visits to the wine-growing districts of France, Italy, and Germany, and to the sherry-producing districts of Spain and Portugal. The work is aptly illustrated by woodcuts which depict various Bacchian experiences.
