The History of Ancient and Modern Wines.London : 1824 Stock Code: 139156
NotesFirst edition of "the first book in English that describes in detail what are today called modern wines" (Gabler). Alexander Henderson (1780-1863) was a Scottish doctor and man of letters, whose expertise on wine and its production was based on observations made during visits to the wine-growing districts of France, Italy, and Germany, and to the sherry-producing districts of Spain and Portugal. The work is aptly illustrated by woodcuts which depict various Bacchian experiences.
Quarto (272 x 212 mm). 20th-century quarter calf to style, red morocco label, earlier shelf label transposed to spine, marbled sides.
Vignette on title page, 7 woodcuts, 24 woodcut initials, folding table at page 380.
Bound without half-title. A little rubbed, very minor wear to tips, front joint splitting but firm, foxing to endpapers and surrounding leaves and sporadically thereafter, else contents generally clean. A very good copy.
