The History of England, for the Use of Schools and Young Persons.London: Printed for Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, 1826 Stock Code: 125532
NotesNew edition, first published in 1806, of William Godwin's pseudonymous children's history book. Godwin used the name of Edward Baldwin to publish several children's books, fearing the opprobrium associated with his own name. Godwin sets out in the preface his aim to write in a way appealing to children, not recounting endless superfluous details, but to give them "a bird's eye view of the History of England, not to exhibit it by the aid of a microscope".
Duodecimo (174 x 103 mm). Contemporary tree sheep, unlettered, spine ruled in gilt.
Engraved frontispiece and 3 other plates.
Later ownership ticket to pastedown, ownership signature to front free endpaper dated 1827. Joints splitting but holding, light wear to extremities, some light foxing. A very good copy.
