Notes

First edition of Thackeray's second major work, published serially in 23 parts between 1848 and 1850. The work was interrupted for three months at the end of 1849 because of Thackeray's "nearly fatal illness (most probably cholera or typhoid)" (ODNB). Arthur Pendennis was used as the narrator of many of Thackeray's subsequent books, and is "an admitted alter ego who undergoes subtle analysis and complex criticism".
