The History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in Ireland,
with The true State and Condition of that Kingdom before the Year 1640; and the most material Passages and Actions which since that Time have contributed to the Calamities it hath undergone.London, printed by H.P. for J. Wilford, and T. Jauncy, 1720 Stock Code: 134528
NotesFirst edition. Clarendon's account of the events in Ireland after the death of Charles I, the supplement to his famous History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England (1702-4), had previously circulated in manuscript only. Edward Hyde (as he then was) was a close personal friend and political ally of the first duke of Ormond (1610-1688), leader of the Irish protestant Royalists, and Clarendon's account of the Civil War in Ireland is in part a defence of Ormond's conduct.
Octavo (195 x 119 mm). Contemporary panelled calf, spine with double gilt rules, later red morocco label.
Engraved frontispiece portrait of the Duke of Ormond.
Armoral bookplate of William Clavering-Cowper, 2nd Earl Cowper (1709–1764). Headcap and joints neatly restored, paper clean and strong, a very good copy.
