Notes

First edition. Clarendon's account of the events in Ireland after the death of Charles I, the supplement to his famous History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England (1702-4), had previously circulated in manuscript only. Edward Hyde (as he then was) was a close personal friend and political ally of the first duke of Ormond (1610-1688), leader of the Irish protestant Royalists, and Clarendon's account of the Civil War in Ireland is in part a defence of Ormond's conduct.
