The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling.
In Six Volumes.
London: for A. Millar, 1749 Stock Code: 84920
First edition, with the errata leaf in volume I. One of only three 18th-century English novels (with Robinson Crusoe and Gulliver's Travels) still widely read with real pleasure by modern audiences, with all the points to distinguish it from the virtually identical reprint of the same year: vol. 1: errata leaf after contents, cancels B9 & B10; vol. 2 cancels B4 & B5, both signed 'vol. II'; vol. 3 cancels H8, H9, H10, M3, Q11; vol. 5 cancel N8, signed 'Vol. V'; vol. 6 B5 unsigned. This set in attractive contemporary bindings.
Description
6 volumes, duodecimo. Contemporary tan calf, spines gilt in compartments, red and green morocco labels, red speckled edges. Housed in brown cloth slipcase by the Chelsea Bindery.
Condition
Repair to title page of volume I, bindings a little rubbed and professionally repaired at the joints and corners, occasional light spotting to contents. An excellent set.
