Newly translated out of the original tongues, and with the former translations diligently compared, and revised.Cambridge : 1661 Stock Code: 136992
NotesA handsome English Bible from the early years of the Restoration period. The Bible is listed by ESTC as being issued with an additional book of the Psalms (alongside their inclusion in the Old Testament), with continuous registration although with a separate title page and pagination. The additional Psalms are here not present. Wing lists it as a separate book (B2476) and it may be that not all copies were issued with it. The text of both the Old and New Testaments is complete.
Quarto (174 x 110 mm). Contemporary black English morocco, spine richly gilt to compartments, boards panelled in gilt, gilt turn-ins, marbled sides, gilt edges.
Engraved title page; printed in double columns with red ruling; divisional title page for New Testament.
Some early manicules in red crayon and occasionally in pencil to text; 20th-century bookplates of William T. Stevens to front pastedown and front free endpaper verso, ownership signatures dated 1765 and 1771 (William Pickering) to front pastedown and front free endpaper verso, early signature S. Pickering to title page, 19th-century library stamp to front free endpaper verso (Williams Library), cutting on the engraver Robert Vaughan affixed to front free endpaper facing title page, alongside further pencilled ownership signature. A little rubbed, joints a little rubbed with very minor splits at foot, light patch of wear to rear cover, final few leaves a little tatty at fore edge with minor early paper repair to final leaf, repair to short closed tear Old Testament pp. 613-14 and New Testament pp. 20-21, very occasional short closed tears at leaf extremities, occasionally a little closely cropped at head with very occasional minor loss to headings. An attractive copy.
