The Hounds of Tindalos.Sauk City: Arkham House, 1946 Stock Code: 119634
NotesFirst edition, first printing. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Richard Hughes, With great admiration for the high excellence and artistry of his stories in a related medium. Frank Belknap Long, New York, February 24, 1946".
The recipient of this work is believed to be American Comic Group writer and editor Richard E. Hughes (1909-1974). Hughes's main project at ACG was the highly successful horror comic Adventures into the Unknown, the entire first issue of which Long wrote in 1948. Long, an "important member of the Lovecraft circle", continued to contribute to the comic, soon joined by fellow Weird Tales contributor Manly Wade Wellman. The majority of the stories however were written by Hughes; under at least 11 different pseudonyms. Long wrote of Hughes that he "believed that the real old-style ghost story, with the chill factor stressed to the utmost, would have a tremendous appeal to kids and adults alike". The Hounds of Tindalos is Long's first collection of short stories "of the weird and supernatural", and was issued in a run of 2,602 copies.
Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine in yellow. With the dust jacket.
Spine gently rolled, slight wear to tips; a very good copy in the jacket with browned spine, slight creasing to extremities, a couple of small nicks to spine ends.
