Notes

First edition of Bethel's observations on the commercial and constitutional circumstances of different states, based on his travels around Europe in the 1660s after serving in the Rump Parliament. The section on England is expanded from his The Present Interest of England Stated of 1671. Bethel, a republican, is careful not to attack the British Restoration, but clearly champions the republic of the United Provinces. He also extensively defends liberty of conscience as in the interest of all nations, and criticizes religious persecution.
