Second edition of this account of British diplomat and explorer Augustus Raymond Margary's journey to explore overland trade routes between British India and China.
The first edition was also published in 1876, that is, the year following the murder of Margary and his entire staff, which sparked the Margary Affair, leading to the Chefoo Convention.
Provenance: contemporary ink ownership inscription of ?L Margary dated 24 March 88 at verso of front free endpaper; possibly Louisa Jane Margary (1823-1913), mother of the late diplomat.

Octavo. Publisher's brown cloth sometime rebacked, titles in gilt on spine, decorative borders blocked in black on spine and front board, black endpapers.

Condition
Light wear to extremities, rubbed, occasional light foxing, a very good copy.
