The Ladies in Parliament and Other Pieces.
New Edition. Republished with Addition and Annotations.London: George Bell, 1888 Stock Code: 115345
A later edition of a collection first published in 1869, and the title piece having been "composed during the great agitation which followed the rejection of Mr. Gladstone's Reform Bill of 1866 giving some notion of how a Greek Comedian might have written, when at his very worst, if he had lived in the days of chignons and female suffrage an attempt to mimic the jovial conservatism which goes rollicking through the long swinging metres of Aristophanes" (p.1). The author's view of "the Ladies" is very conservative indeed, which is fairly remarkable considering that the work was originally published in the same year as Mill's Subjection of Women.
This copy inscribed on the half-title to the wife of Trevelyan's fellow Whig historian W.E.H. Lecky; "Elizabeth Lecky from George O. Trevelyan, April, 1899". Elizabeth edited the memoirs of her ancestor Gen. Anthony Boldewijn Gijsbert van Dedem, and published a biography of her husband, together with a number of articles on political and social matters.
Octavo. Original blue cloth lettered in black and red.
A little rubbed, but overall very good.
