First edition in book form of this novel left incomplete at the author's death, on 6 December 1882. A postscript by Trollope's son Henry explains briefly how the plot was to conclude. The novel should have consisted of 60 chapters which first appeared in print, in a paper called Life: A Weekly Journal Of Society, Literature, the Fine Arts and Finance, from November 1882 to October 1883, when both the UK and US book-form editions were first published.
