The Less Deceived:
Poems.Hessle: The Marvell Press, 1955 Stock Code: 147210
"Another church: matting, seats, and stone, / And little books..."First edition, first impression, one of 300 copies in the first issue binding, with the relevant issue point for the first impression: the misprint "floor" for "sea" in the first line of "Absences" (p. 38). The Less Deceived was Larkin's second book of poems, and contains some of his most popular verses, including "Church Going" (pp. 26-27).
This copy has an appealing literary provenance, from the library of publisher John K. Martin (b. 1930), the founder of the Black Sparrow Press, with his book label on the rear pastedown.
Octavo. Original yellow-green cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket.
A near-fine copy, very faint browning to endpapers, contents otherwise clean and crisp, in the very good dust jacket, not price-clipped, spine somewhat faded, shallow chips and short closed tears to spine ends and tips, bright and presenting nicely.
