NotesFirst edition, a handsomely bound copy. Sir John William Kaye (1814-1876) had himself served in the Bengal Artillery before joining the civil service of the East India Company; he wrote extensively on India, his best known work being the valuable The History of the Sepoy War in India, 1857-8 (3 volumes, 1864-76). Charles Theophilus Metcalfe (1785-1846), Baron Metcalfe, was born in Calcutta and had a long and distinguished career in India, culminating in the lieutenant-governership of North Western Provinces (1836-38).
2 volumes, octavo (213 x 128 mm). Contemporary calf, richly gilt spines, tawny and black morocco twin labels, single line gilt border on sides enclosing blind tooled dogs-tooth border, marbled edges and endpapers.
Labels a little chipped, old partial dampstain to back cover of volume II otherwise a very good set.
