NotesFirst edition of this uncommon life of Bonaparte; as advertised at the end of vol. II, "the proprietors propose publishing a Third Volume", and this was added in 1815. It was reissued in an unillustrated edition by a different group of booksellers in that year as History of Napoleon Bonaparte, the author given as W. B. Heweston (although his name is sometimes transcribed as Hewetson).
2 volumes, octavo (200 x 122 mm). Contemporary marbled calf, smooth spines divided by groupings of gilt fillets, gilt cornucopia in third and fifth compartments, decorative device in first and sixth, red label, gilt curlicue numbering roundel, gilt roll tool border to sides, Shell pattern marbled endpapers, gilt edges.
Engraved vignette title pages by James Wallis after Joshua Cristall, portrait frontispiece of Napoleon Crossing the Alps (based on the painting by David), 14 portraits and 7 scenes from the life of Napoleon by Wallis after Cristall or Laffert.
Some craquelure to bindings, front joint of vol. I cracked but sound, a little wear to extremities, some pale browning and scattered foxing, yet this remains an attractive copy.
