The Little Minister.London: Cassell & Company, Limited, 1891 Stock Code: 144247
First edition of the author's first successful novel, in desirable condition. There were three silent film treatments before the sound version with Katharine Hepburn was released in 1934.
Sadleir notes that the book is a bibliographic curiosity: "one curious feature of make-up is unique in my experience. In Vol. I the signature lettering is in roman caps., in Vol. II in ital. l.c., in Vol. III in ital. caps".
3 volumes, octavo. Original brown cloth, spines lettered in gilt, floral pattern endpapers. Housed in custom brown cloth sleeves within brown cloth book-form box, spine lettering mimicking the originals.
With complete 10pp. publisher's catalogue at end of volume 1 (Sadleir lists a 12-page catalogue, this thus a variant, but both are coded "9.91").
Some hinges splitting but all holding, light bumping at extremities, top edges soiled, yet still a particularly nice copy.
Sadleir 167; Wolff 340.
