The Logic of Provability.Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1993 Stock Code: 132997
NotesFirst edition, first impression, presentation copy, inscribed by the author to the philosopher Willard Van Orman Quine on the front pastedown: "For Van, George". Though their relationship was evidently cordial, Boolos and Quine did clash on questions of logic; in the present book Boolos writes "It seems appropriate here to mention one philosophical misunderstanding that must be obviated, which has to do with W. V. Quine's well-known critique of the notions of necessity and possibility", although Boolos does go on to say that his own view does not completely undermine Quine's (pp. xxxiii-xxxiv). The Logic of Provability was Boolos's fully rewritten and updated successor to his Unprovability of Consistency (1979); its subject is the relation between provability and modal logic.
