James Herriot was the pen name of James Alfred Wight (1916-1995), a country veterinary surgeon serving Yorkshire farmers for some 50 years, beginning in 1937. He is best known as the author of a series of eight books about veterinary practice, animals, and their owners, set in the Yorkshire Dales of the 1930s to 1950s, and which began with If Only They Could Talk (1970). The series sold some 60 million copies over the years.
