Notes

First edition. One of 1650 copies published on May 28, 1864 with the list of Thoreau's books priced and no edition statement on the copyright page. The cloth is a variant not listed in BAL. In August of 1846 Thoreau briefly left Walden Pond to travel to Mount Katahdin in Maine. The record of this trip, entitled "Ktaadn", was first published in The Union magazine in 1848, and became the first chapter of the present volume. The second chapter, "Chesuncook", relates a trip to Maine in 1853 and the final chapter, previously unpublished, describes a journey along the Allegash river. A beautiful copy, Thoreau's books are rarely found in such excellent condition.
