Notes

First UK edition, presentation copy inscribed by the author on the half-title, "To Miss Mildred Williamson with the Compliments of Mark Twain Oct. 5 1900". This UK edition is enlarged with two new pieces - "Christian Science and the Book of Mrs Eddy" and "Diplomatic Pay and Clothes" - omitted from the American edition, which was published earlier the same year. Twain at the time of this inscription was the guest of newspaper proprietor Hugh Gilzean-Reid at Dollis Hill House in North London.
