NotesFirst UK edition, presentation copy inscribed by the author on the half-title, "To Miss Mildred Williamson with the Compliments of Mark Twain Oct. 5 1900". This UK edition is enlarged with two new pieces - "Christian Science and the Book of Mrs Eddy" and "Diplomatic Pay and Clothes" - omitted from the American edition, which was published earlier the same year. Twain at the time of this inscription was the guest of newspaper proprietor Hugh Gilzean-Reid at Dollis Hill House in North London.
Octavo. Original orange cloth boards, gilt titles to spine, front board pictorially stamped in yellow and black, adverts at rear. Housed in a cloth chemise and morocco backed folding case.
Bookplates of collector John C. Gerber, and armorial bookplate of Clifton Waller Barrett. Library stamp and deaccession ticket to endpapers. Spine tanned and worn, with two perforations to cloth, sides somewhat dust-soiled with rubbing to the extremities, front free endpaper and frontispiece both loosening. Nonetheless a good copy, internally clean, sound and unsophisticated.
