The Master and Margarita.
Translated from the Russian by Michael Glenny.London : 1967 Stock Code: 135813
NotesFirst complete edition in English, first impression. Although this translation by Glenny was beaten to the press by Mirra Ginsburg's translation earlier the same year, Ginsburg had taken as her copy text the heavily censored Soviet version, published in two issues of the journal Moskva in November 1966 and January 1967. There was also a samizdat version in circulation which included the parts cut out by the official censors, and Glenny was able to access the fuller text, producing this version, which remains the standard English translation of one of the 20th century's literary masterworks. The first appearance of the full text in Russian was published in Frankfurt in 1969.
Octavo. Original green and black boards, titles to spine in gilt. With the dust jacket.
Spine ends a trifle bumped, faint discolouration at head of spine. A near-fine copy in the near-fine dust jacket, price-clipped, minor creasing to foot of spine.
