Notes

First and limited edition, number 545 of 550 copies, of this handsome publication with Millais and Thorburn's wonderful designs superbly printed in coloured lithography and photogravure. The chromos were executed by Albert Frisch of Berlin. Frisch's early career was as a pioneering photographer in South America: "in 1875 he opened the 'Kunstanstalt Albert Frisch', which specialised in producing premium quality, photomechanical reproductions. The workshop worked in various capacities for the numerous collections, libraries and museums in the Prussian metropolis" (Wolff ed.) Explorers and Entrepreneurs behind the Camera, p.28). The gravures were executed by Walter L. Colls, a highly skilled copperplate engraver and amateur photographer, a close friend of P. H. Emerson, and a member of the Linked Ring, the pictorialist photography group, members of which included Alvin Langdon Coburn, Frederick H. Evans, James Craig Annan, and Alfred Stieglitz. The publication is a highly effective combination of technically accurate and pleasingly composed artwork with the latest in reprographic techniques, a point emphasised by Schwerdt: "A fine publication, one of the few modern shooting books which has considerably risen in value, probably on account of the plates after Thorburn, printed by Albert Frisch which are exceptionally beautiful".
