Notes

An attractively bound and illustrated fourth edition of an important book, edited and enlarged by Edwin Norris, first published in 1848. Physician and ethnologist James Cowles Prichard was (along with William Lawrence and Charles William Wells) one of the three British scientific precursors to Darwin and evolutionary theory. His central idea was the unity of mankind as a variegated but single species. He was one of the first scientists to suggest that Africa was the original source of the human racial diaspora. He was also made great advances in psychological study, being appointed one of the three medical Commissioners in Lunacy in 1845, and being the first to name senile dementia. With the bookplates of Archer Ryland (1792-1857), one of the great legal minds of the 19th century, who edited and annotated Blackstone's Commentaries on the Laws of England. Uncommon.
