The Naturalist's Library.
Ornithology. Birds of Britain and Ireland. Part 1(-3).Edinburgh, Lizars, [c.1850] Stock Code: 123654
NotesThree volumes only of William Jardine's beautifully illustrated overview of the animal kingdom, here comprising three of the four books on birds. The series proved highly popular, with several reprints over the 19th century. "The Naturalist's Library was a tribute to a skilful printer who employed the latest technology to produce the volumes cheaply; to an editor who could organize a team of contributors and supply any deficit himself; but most of all to an inspired seizing of the public mood of the moment by giving these small volumes on natural history to all classes with the aim of informing them of the 'Great Works of Creation'" (Jackson and Davis, Sir William Jardine: A Life in Natural History, p. 83).
3 volumes, small octavo (161 x 103 mm). Early 20th-century green half calf, red and black labels to spine lettered in gilt, marbled sides and edges.
With 91 hand coloured plates.
Light rubbing to sides and extremities, contents clean. In very good condition.
