First trade edition of this wonderful example of Victorian book production. Longman employed the finest wood-engravers of the day and the project was overseen by the antiquary and illuminator Henry Shaw (1800-1873): "He provided initials and ornament for the prestigious New Testament published by Longman in 1864 with engravings of works by artists from Fra Angelico to Raphael" (ODNB). A limited edition of 250 large paper copies was issued in 1864. Riviere also used red morocco in binding the edition, with no established priority of issue.
Small square quarto (240 x 187 mm). Original black morocco by Riviere, decorative gilt spine, concentric gilt and blind tooled borders on sides, central gilt roundel, all edges gilt, two-line gilt turn-ins.
Illustrated throughout with full page wood-engraved plates by the Dalziel Brothers, Green, Cooper, Linton and others after Old Master paintings, decorative borders throughout.
Contemporary gift inscription "Joseph Parker a new years' gift from his affectionate aunt Eliza Andrews. 1st January 1865" to the front free endpaper. Light rubbing at extremities, sporadic very light foxing and toning at extremities but generally clean. A very good copy.
