With illustrations by Charles E. Brock.London : 1922 Stock Code: 140628
NotesAn attractive set of Austen's novels, first published with Brock's illustrations between 1907 and 1909. C. E. Brock (1870-1938) first appeared as an illustrator of Jane Austen for Macmillan's 1895-7 Illustrated Standard Novels series, for Pride and Prejudice, with Hugh Thomson illustrating the other five titles. That series appeared in black and white, which better suited Thomson's skilful use of line. A decade later J. M. Dent, realising Brock's potential as a colourist, commissioned him to redo the Pride and Prejudice suite in colour, and also to create colour illustrations for the other five Austen titles. The colourful costumes and interior decor depicted here are reputedly accurate to the Regency period, as Charles Brock and his brother Henry collected antique furniture and clothing so that their friends and relations could model for the artists in their Cambridge studio.
6 volumes, octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spines in gilt, illustrated front pastedowns.
Colour frontispiece with tissue-guards to each volume, title pages printed in blue and red, and 90 colour plates.
Spines slightly sunned, light flecking to covers, slight offsetting to front free endpapers, faint foxing to rear endpapers, contents unmarked, plates bright. A very good set, clean and sound.
