In ten volumes. Edited by R. Brimley Johnson with illustrations by William Cubit Cooke and ornaments by F. C. Tilney.London: J. M. Dent and Company, 1892 Stock Code: 143546
First Dent editions, first printings, with two Chapters numbered 32 in Mansfield Park. The text is based on the last edited edition published in the authors lifetime. The illustrations here by William Cubitt Cooke (1866-1951) are first attempt at period-appropriate representation, with Regency dress and furnishings. After Richard Bentley, whose last edition is dated 1866, the fledgling London publisher J. M. Dent was the next to take up Austen's novels for publication, which first appeared in this ten-volume edition in 1892. Dent's publication is notable as the first of Austen's works to include any critical apparatus, as well as containing the largest number of illustrations produced by a single Austen artist to that date.
