First and sole edition of this attractively produced memorial to twenty-eight recipients of the Victoria Cross, largely awarded during the Indian Mutiny. Very scarce: Copac locates just two copies among British and Irish institutional libraries (British Library and V&A), OCLC citing no others in international holdings. Not all recipients were officers at the time they distinguished themselves: Peter Gill, a Dubliner, was serving as a sergeant-major with the Loodiana Regiment at Benares and another Irishman, Andrew Fitzgibbon, one of the youngest recipients (aged 15), was a hospital apprentice when he showed "great coolness and courage at the capture of the North Taku Forts" (China, 1860). Both Captain George Fosbery and Lieutenant Henry Pitcher won their VCs during the Ambela Campaign (1863-64) on the North West Frontier. Each commemoration includes a full citation.

The editor, Thomas Carnegy Anderson (1832-1869) was a captain with the 12th Bengal Native Infantry, which mutinied at Jhansi on 5 June 1857, and was garrison barrack master at Fort William, Calcutta (Kolkata). He was the brother of major-general Robert Patrick Anderson and edited the latter's A Personal Journal of the Siege of Lucknow (London: Thacker, 1858).
