Notes

First edition, first impression, accompanied by a piece of Jodrell Bank ephemera signed by the author. This, the British astronomer's survey of the history and development of space exploration, is an expansion of his lecture of the same name delivered at the University of Edinburgh on 6 March 1973.
Jodrell Bank was the location of Lovell's radio astronomy observatory and research centre, established in 1945. It was at Jodrell Bank that the first landscape of the moon's surface was projected in 1966 from data provided by Luna 9, the first probe to soft-land on the surface of the moon.
