First edition, second issue. After Dickens rejected Bradbury and Evans as publishers over the circumstances surrounding the failure of his marriage, he transferred the rights to publish Oliver Twist, Dombey and Son, David Copperfield, Bleak House, and Little Dorrit to Chapman and Hall. Remaining sheets were transferred from Bradbury and Evans to Chapman and Hall at the end of 1861. These were typically bound and reissued by Chapman and Hall, as here, the contents unchanged except for their imprint at the foot of the engraved title. Lars Kremers styles these "divorce copies" and dates their issue to 1862-66. The sheets in this copy have no stab-holes, indicating that they were not bound up from parts. The case binding has the same design on the boards as copies of A Tale of Two Cities with the third-state 1860 title page. It matches Kremers's description of a green diaper-grain cloth with a chain pattern stamped in blind on the boards, and the author statement "Charles Dickens" stamped in gilt.

Demy octavo. Original green diaper cloth, smooth spine stamped in blind in compartments bordered by a thick-and-thin border enclosing a dotted line, lettered in gilt "David / Copperfield" and "Charles Dickens", sides bordered in blind with three thick lines enclosing chain design, links enclosing four-lobed flower heads, foliate pattern at corners, peach coloured coated endpapers.

Etched frontispiece, vignette title page, and 38 plates after "Phiz" (Hablot Knight Browne). Bradbury and Evans's first state title page, dated 1850; vignette title-page with the imprint of Chapman and Hall, undated.

Spine faded, extremities a touch worn, inner hinges cracked, a little spotting to plates, a good copy.
