First edition of this gift book, which includes many works by Lord Byron, the abolitionist John Bicknell and extracts from contemporary travel books, such as "A Coffee House at Sarabuse described". Completing the work is an illustrated memoranda for 1826, listing important events which took place on certain days in each month. The Pledge of Friendship was published annually between 1826 and 1829, and was continued in the subsequent four years as The Gem. An important feature of English book selling, gift books like The Pledge of Friendship included contributions from many of the foremost writers and artists of the day, providing evidence of the tastes and social attitudes of their time.

Miniature octavo. Original pale purple boards, decorative frame in blind to covers, purple endpapers, edges gilt. Housed in the purple slipcase.

Condition
Dedication page completed in neat contemporary hand. Spine lightly browned, rubbing to extremities and covers; a very good copy in the slipcase with slight scuffing to extremities and a small mark to front panel.
