London: Addey and Co., 1853 Stock Code: 144453
First UK collected edition, and the first separately-published collected edition of Poe's poetry (Poe's collected works of prose and poetry were published in three volumes in the US the same year). The volume includes an introductory essay and biography of Poe by James Hannay, who dedicated the edition to Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
Description
Octavo. Original green cloth (other variant colours of cloth known, likely without priority), titles and decoration to spine in gilt, covers elaborately blocked in blind, yellow endpapers, edges untrimmed.
Illustrations
Frontispiece and 19 illustrations in the text.
Condition
Bone & Son bookbinder's ticket to rear pastedown; neat ownership signature dated Christmas 1852 (the title page thus dated a year ahead, as often for end-of-year Victorian publishing). Light sunning to spine, a little shaken with gatherings standing proud but all holding firm. A very good copy, partly unopened.
Bibliography
BAL 16210 (incorrectly citing a date of 1857); Lois Davis Vines, Poe Abroad: Influence Reputation Affinities, p. 55.
