The Poetical Works.
Including the Dramas of Wallenstein, Remorse, and Zapolya. In three volumes.London: William Pickering, 1828 Stock Code: 147753
"In Xanadu did Kubla Khan / A stately pleasure-dome decree..."First collected edition, one of 300 copies; there were also 12 copies printed on large paper. J. Dykes Campbell, later a biographer of Coleridge, wrote in 1888 that his copy of this edition "must be a rare book... from whatever cause, its scarcity is incontestable" (The Athenaeum, p. 307).
Coleridge was unhappy with the work, which was succeeded, the following year, by an amended edition; in Campbell's words, "How much Coleridge was dissatisfied with the edition of 1828 is witnessed by the many alterations he made in preparing that of 1829" (The Athenaeum, p. 308). His most popular poems are collected in this volume, including "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and "Kubla Khan".
3 volumes, octavo (184 x 112 mm). Contemporary brown half calf, marbled sides, raised bands, twin black morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, three compartments decorated in gilt, marbled edges and endpapers.
Bookplate of Thomas Conolly and shelf labels to front pastedowns. A very good copy indeed, joints and edges lightly rubbed, spot of wear to tips, light foxing to first and last few leaves of each volume, contents otherwise notably clean and crisp.
Haney 36; The Athenaeum, No. 3150, 10 March 1888.
