NotesFirst edition in English of this spurious memoir of the French statesman John Baptist Colbert, Minister of Finances under Louis XIV, generally accepted to have been written by the French novelist Gatien Courtilz de Sandras. Under Colbert ministry France's finances were rejuvenated, with bankruptcy averted and manufacturing and trade improved. The first French edition was published the previous year.
