The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club.London: Chapman & Hall, 1910 Stock Code: 130775
First edition thus, first impression. The Dickensian reviewed Cecil's edition upon publication, noting that "Aldin has very wisely chosen to illustrate the book throughout, and although it makes two large volumes, no one will regret that, considering the wealth of pictures it contains" (p. 322). Cecil Aldin was "identified with clever work in colour of character, sport, and humour", and this work was received as well-suited to Dicken's work (Illustrated Sporting & Dramatic News, Volume 74, 1911).
2 volumes, large octavo (258 x 172 mm). Contemporary red half morocco by Asprey, titles and illustrations to spines in gilt in compartments, red cloth sides, marbled endpapers, edges gilt.
Frontispieces, vignette title pages printed in red and black, 24 colour plates with tissue guards, and numerous illustrations in the text.
Slight rubbing to sides and extremities, scuff to bottom edge of rear board of vol. I; a very good set.
