Notes

First edition of Webster's correspondence, in an attractive binding. Daniel Webster (1782-1852) served as Secretary of State under Presidents William Henry Harrison, John Tylor and Millard Fillmore, one of only two individuals to serve under three presidents. He was the chief negotiator for the Webster-Ashburton Treaty, which established the boundary of the Canadian-US border. His correspondence was edited by his son Fletcher Webster (1818-1862), who had served as Chief Clerk of the State Department under his father, and died in service as a colonel in the Civil War.
