The Professor, a Tale.
By Currer Bell. In Two Volumes.London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1857 Stock Code: 139007
NotesFirst edition. This is one of 719 copies noted by Smith as being thus bound up "on or before 30 June 1859" (p. 162). The Professor was written before Jane Eyre (1847) and originally submitted to publishers along with both Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey, then independently, and rejected many times; eventually it was published posthumously (Charlotte died in 1855). This copy belonged to the shipbuilder Harry Smith Edwards of South Shields near Newcastle.
2 volumes in 1, octavo. Publisher's remainder binding of green diagonal morocco-grain cloth, titles in gilt to spine, borders in blind, pale yellow coated endpapers, with the binder's ticket of Westleys & Co to rear pastedown.
Advertisements leaf at the end of volume 1 for "Mrs. Gaskell's Memoirs of Currer Bell"; 8pp. advertisements for the "Uniform Edition of the Works of Currer Bell" and 24 pp. of publisher's catalogue dated April 1859 at the end of volume 2.
Embossed bookseller's stamp (W. E. Franklin of Newcastle on Tyne) and armorial bookplate (Harry Smith Edwards) to front free endpaper. Corners gently bumped, a hint of wear to extremities, the binding otherwise firm, hinges sometime repaired, internally clean. A very good copy.
