Notes

First edition. This is one of 719 copies noted by Smith as being thus bound up "on or before 30 June 1859" (p. 162). The Professor was written before Jane Eyre (1847) and originally submitted to publishers along with both Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey, then independently, and rejected many times; eventually it was published posthumously (Charlotte died in 1855). This copy belonged to the shipbuilder Harry Smith Edwards of South Shields near Newcastle.
