This is an attractively produced guide to the restoration work at the neoclassical Palace of Saint Michael and Saint George, built between 1819 and 1824, to a design by Sir George Whitmore, who served as commanding officer with the Royal Engineers at Malta. It survived the Italian bombardment of Corfu in 1923 but sustained severe damage while housing refugees from Epirus during the Greek Civil War (1946-1949). "This booklet had been prepared to record the work of restoration carried out in the Palace under the chairmanship of the late Sir Charles Peake The introductory note was written by Mr. A. E. Lambert while serving as Counsellor of the British Embassy in Athens" (Preface).
Landscape quarto. Original colour wrappers in a padded binding of silver grey cloth, front cover with medal of the Order in white, gold silken pastedown endpapers.
15 photographic plates (one in colour); text in English and Greek.
Touch of discolouration to fore edge of front cover, wire stitching just a little rusty. An excellent copy.
