London: George G. Harrap & Co., [1910] Stock Code: 128465
First Pogany edition, signed limited issue, number 7 of 25 copies signed by the artist and printed on japon (a further 500 signed copies were issued on paper, alongside a trade issue; this is thus the most desirable and scarcest issue). Featuring intricately decorated borders and text printed in manuscript style, this edition of Coleridge's masterpiece is perhaps Pogany's best work, "considered by many to be among the most beautiful books ever produced" (Jeff Menges).
Description
Folio (317 x 225 mm). Original full vellum by Morrell, upper cover and spine illuminated in gilt and various colours, decorated endpapers, top edge gilt.
Illustrations
Colour decorated title page, 20 tipped-in colour plates after paintings by Pogany, numerous other full page illustrations, each page of text within decorative borders.
Condition
Presentation inscription dated 1919 to initial blank. Very light soiling to vellum, internally fresh and bright, with a small abrasion to one plate. A very good copy.
