Notes

First edition, first impression. A fine association copy, being the copy of Lionel Charles Robbins (1898-1984), head of economics at the LSE, with his pencilled ownership initials to the front free endpaper. "At the LSE Robbins dominated the economics department for thirty years and built it up to its pre-eminent position in British economics. In the 1930s he gathered there an outstanding group of young economists, including John Hicks, Nicholas Kaldor, and Friedrich von Hayek, whom he first met when Hayek came from Vienna to deliver four public lectures in January 1931. Hayek immediately became a close friend and the LSE became for several years a centre of academic opposition to Keynesian economics" (ODNB). Their mutual respect and friendship led Hayek to send Robbins his typescript of The Road to Serfdom with a request for his comments, which have unfortunately not survived (Susan Howson, Lionel Robbins, p. 420). However, Hayek's views were more radical than those of Robbins, and Robbins later wrote of The Road to Serfdom that Hayek was "too apt to extrapolate his apprehensions of evil and to assume that deviations from his norm lead cumulatively to disaster... what worries me is not the contention that this sort of thing may happen but rather any assumption that it must" (ibid, p. 846). Hayek and Robbins later became estranged, due to the latter's disapproval of Hayek divorcing his wife to remarry Hélène Bitterlich.
