Notes

Original offprint, presentation copy, inscribed by the author to the economist Lionel Robbins, the editor of the journal, on the front wrapper in a cramped hand: "To Lionel with hearty thanks for a place where more of his work is understood than mine. Paul R. 10th of May 1935" (?). Rosenstein-Rodan (1902-1985) was one of the founders and first leaders of the field of development economics. His formative intellectual years were in the Austrian School of economics at the university of Vienna. In 1931 he moved to the Department of Political Economy at University College, London, and later to the LSE, where he became part of Lionel Robbins's circle, which throughout the 1930s was noted for its opposition to Keynesian economics and its support for the free market; other members included Friedrich von Hayek and John Hicks.
