A pre-publication copy of Rushdie's controversial work
A pre-publication copy of Rushdie's The Satanic Verses, with his literary agent's US and UK contact details to the title page. The work is a photocopy of Rushdie's typescript, with his manuscript annotations and corrections all reproduced. The Satanic Verses was Rushdie's fourth novel and a major work in the magical realist canon. It was first published by Viking Penguin on 26 September 1988 and ignited furious controversy, leading to the book being banned and protested across the world, with the author placed under police protection for several years. In her account of the ensuring controversy, Appignanesi claims that alongside Viking Penguin eight other publishers bid for the work. A spokesperson for Viking stating that upon publication they "thought we had acquired, edited and published a literary book, and had no sense of the controversy that later emerged" (Appignanesi, p. 149).Description
