The Second Afghan War, 1878-80. Abridged Official Account.
Produced in the Intelligence Branch Army Head-Quarters, India.London, John Murray, 1908 Stock Code: 140704
NotesFirst and sole edition. This is the only relic of MacGregor's massive official history of the campaign, which was either "treated as a secret work" as according to the Preface, or suppressed by the government for criticisms of Indian defence policy "beyond its terms of reference" (ODNB) Either way, it was reworked by Cardew, historian of the Bengal Army and later of Hodson's Horse, with the intention that it would be "placed on sale", but was again held back when it was decided that "the time had not yet come when it would be advisable to publish an official account of certain of the incidents of the war, which had been subject to much controversy." This edition, compiled by Samuel Pasfield Oliver, was issued after reconsideration of the question by the Government of India, and further revision by Cardew. This decidedly uncommon account is an indispensable source for the war.
Octavo. Original dark red cloth, gilt-lettered spine within a double ruled panel with coronet corner pieces, similarly blocked in black to front cover, top edge gilt.
Half-tone frontispiece and numerous plates, folding maps and panoramas.
Covers mottled where previously damped, a little shaken but a very good copy, sound, clean and square.
