NotesFirst edition of the Chartwell Edition, the first illustrated edition of Churchill's masterly account of the Second World War. The Chartwell Edition, incorporating Churchill's final revisions and adding illustrations, was produced upon the completion of the Second World War series, which Churchill had published in six volumes between 1948 and 1954. The Second World War ranks as one of the supreme historical achievements of the 20th century, and is commonly cited as a major factor in Churchill being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953. As Max Beloff observed, there was no statesman of the twentieth century "whose retrospective accounts of the great events in which he has taken part have so dominated subsequent historical thinking". This copy is in the standard binding, with a deluxe blue quarter morocco binding also issued.
6 volumes, large octavo. Original red cloth, brown labels and gilt panels to spines, portrait medallion embossed on brown label on front covers, red endpapers, top edges red.
Coloured frontispiece in each volume, 185 half-tone plates, numerous maps, plans and diagrams, many of them folding.
Spines very lightly sunned, light rubbing and chipping to labels as usual, vol I gently bowed with sunning to fore-edge, occasional spots to text; a very good set, particularly bright.
